First grade enjoyed a wonderful trip to Doylestown visiting the James A. Michener Museum of Art. They had the opportunity to observe and learn about contemporary artists, such as local painter Elizabeth Osborne, and experience sitting in the Nakashima reading room—an installation of classic Japanese furniture from the studio of Bucks County's internationally known woodworker, George Nakashima. 1st graders also enjoyed observing and making sketches of the Bucks County landscape collection and outdoor sculptures. What kind of artwork is it? - Following the trip to the Michener, 1st grade artists have been doing activities to learn more about classical Western art styles: landscape, portrait, and still life. In one activity, students had to work in teams to determine which category a piece of artwork fit into and explain it o their classmates. In another activity, students had to sort artwork based on which artist they thought created it.
