Program Description

The Visual Art Department at Germantown Academy is committed to providing a comprehensive education in the arts within the context of a liberal arts education. Our foundation and advanced curriculum is a well-rounded and versatile approach to the study and application of art. It is designed to provide a creatively stimulating education in an open environment of studio classes. Experimentation and innovation, collaboration and social responsibility are themes built into the curriculum. While these courses extend excellent opportunities for the general study of art and life-long arts advocacy, they are also designed to cultivate serious talents in the visual arts. Many of our students have gone on to prominent careers in commercial, fine, and applied arts.

David Love Awarded Art Educator Award

Earlier this summer Dave Love, Painting, Drawing and Printmaking teacher was awarded the covet-able Pennsylvania Art Educator of the Year Award given by the Pennsylvania Art Education Association, for his work in schools, in supporting arts programming in the region, and for his legacy of academic work that includes national and regional lectures on evolving art education. Recently named the Herbert and Irma Barness Chair for the Arts here at GA, Love is making something of a name for himself in art education circles as a highly innovative teacher whose interests in the fine arts are matched by his interest in art for community service and integrating art teaching with other academic disciplines. He is one of the founders of S.T.E.A.M.education here at GA, a program where faculty from maths, science, art, and music design course work for students that integrate science, technology, engineering, and arts, and mathematics.  The first STEAM Studio course launches in the spring term.
