The Cardboard Cup

Each year the 3D Design students face e the challenge of building functionsl shoes out of nothing except cardboard! As if that were not a big enough challenge, the shoes need to be a minimum of 6 inches off the ground! After laboring away for a few weeks, we go outside for our "race walk" where we quite literally test our footwear. The results is always filled with giggles and someone walks away with the coveted "Cardboard Cup"!

Footbridges for the Academy

Students in Honors Sculpture designed footbridges for the glorious grounds of Germantown Academy!

Using primarily leftover lumber, students created functional bridges. They spent time studying bridges throughout the world, as well as thinking about what constitutes a bridge. Next, they built models of bridges and ultimately, in teams, constructed the full scale foot bridges.

The exciting results speak for themselves.

Leonardo inspired Flying Machines

Each year 3D Design students study the work of Leonardo DaVinci, specifically, his flying machines.

We then ask ourselves, if Leonardo had the  materials that we do in the sculpture studio, what might he construct? we test our machines by flying them off the highest point at GA--the green roof. To really see how well they fly-we put an egg inside!

The results are always interesting and occasionally messy.

Design Thinking Your Super Power

Lower School students dove right into a Design Thinking project this fall.  The challenge was to design a super power that they wish they could have.  They could choose/make-up any super power, but it needed to be something that was helpful to someone, or something else in their community or the world.  The students worked collaboratively to brainstorm (or IDEATE) their sketches on paper.  The next step was to build a sculptural sketch, (or PROTOTYPE).  The prototype needed to go through multiple adjustments (or ITERATIONS), before it was ready for spray paint and labeling/logo design.  Many of the designs were put to the TEST with imagination and brilliant success!  We are currently taking our designs to the iPad and creating digital renderings with 3D imaging software. This project is a great example of combining Science Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, or STEAM. The app we are using is called 123D Design and is free to download if you wish to explore from home.
