On Oct 6 the new Honors Art Gallery had its inaugural exhibition, a varied sampling of art works from our foundations program made by current 10th grade students. The new art gallery, located in the Upper School's Second Floor Hall boasts long wide hallways, lots of light, and plenty of space to move around to view the art works. This is the first of three shows that will be in the space this year - each dedicated to the work of students by grade level, including photography, sculpture, painting and drawing, and Digital Media. The arts faculty were beaming with pride and excitement at the opening reception last week, where the exhibiting artists, their parents and friends, were able convene in the new space and celebrate the hard work of the student artsists. Many attendees mentioned that the new space allows the artwork to live more prominently, and contribute to the pulse of the school.
Sophomore Honors Art students had this to say about their experience:
"It was really cool to be able to walk around and see all of the amazing artwork, knowing it was made by my peers." E. Silvers
"It was a great experience to be able to pull together our best work and be able to get it out into the school."
S. Carr
"I like to see everyones different perspectives on their media of art, and what they've been doing all year."
J. Stack
Program Description
The Visual Art Department at Germantown Academy is committed to providing a comprehensive education in the arts within the context of a liberal arts education. Our foundation and advanced curriculum is a well-rounded and versatile approach to the study and application of art. It is designed to provide a creatively stimulating education in an open environment of studio classes. Experimentation and innovation, collaboration and social responsibility are themes built into the curriculum. While these courses extend excellent opportunities for the general study of art and life-long arts advocacy, they are also designed to cultivate serious talents in the visual arts. Many of our students have gone on to prominent careers in commercial, fine, and applied arts.
