Program Description

The Visual Art Department at Germantown Academy is committed to providing a comprehensive education in the arts within the context of a liberal arts education. Our foundation and advanced curriculum is a well-rounded and versatile approach to the study and application of art. It is designed to provide a creatively stimulating education in an open environment of studio classes. Experimentation and innovation, collaboration and social responsibility are themes built into the curriculum. While these courses extend excellent opportunities for the general study of art and life-long arts advocacy, they are also designed to cultivate serious talents in the visual arts. Many of our students have gone on to prominent careers in commercial, fine, and applied arts.

Poems in Trees: A Collaborative Art Installation

Poems in Trees is an Arts Across the Academy installation inspired by this year’s convocation address, by poet and 4^th grade teacher Julia Blumenreich. It will appear this fall, and expand on campus throughout the school year. The first installation is in the tree line outside of The Art Center and highlights 4^th grade poetic verse inspired by The Preserve. Members of the upper school sculpture program worked with lower school students to create the printed wrappings.

The exhibition series strives to highlight the power and beauty of poetic verse and provide unexpected opportunities to pause and be mindful of our surroundings. Trees around the Academy will be wrapped and woven in block printed verse on muslin ribbons. This sculptural installation will become a powerful embodiment of the high value we place on confident self-expression and observant contemplation by members of our community.

Art Across the Academy: A New Arts Initiative

It wasn't very long ago that most of what we think about when we think about art happened in a studio and was experienced in a gallery or museum. But times have changed, flash mobs, Banksy happenings and site specific installation out of doors have become the new norm for experiencing and interacting with art. In response to this changing landscape, Art teachers Jess Grisafi and Sara Ritz are heading up a new all school initiative called Art Across the Academy, intentionally curated indoor and outdoor spaces designed to share the work of student artists and to introduce the work of professional artists. In addition to The Art Center Gallery and The Honors Art Gallery, look for work in The Pavillion, The Library, The Preserve, and offices and green spaces around campus.
