Program Description

The Visual Art Department at Germantown Academy is committed to providing a comprehensive education in the arts within the context of a liberal arts education. Our foundation and advanced curriculum is a well-rounded and versatile approach to the study and application of art. It is designed to provide a creatively stimulating education in an open environment of studio classes. Experimentation and innovation, collaboration and social responsibility are themes built into the curriculum. While these courses extend excellent opportunities for the general study of art and life-long arts advocacy, they are also designed to cultivate serious talents in the visual arts. Many of our students have gone on to prominent careers in commercial, fine, and applied arts.

Art For Change Parents Committee Presentation April 9th at 7 pm

Art For Change!
Wednesday, April 9
7pm
Honickman Auditorium

Join us for an exciting presentation focused on the plans and ideas behind the newly developed initiative, "Art for Change.”* This program seeks to educate and encourage creative individuals to find ways to utilize their talents for the benefit of their communities.

The Parents’ Committee program will feature opening remarks by Gabrielle Russomagno, 1760, Upper School Visual Arts Chair, who will speak about the impressive range of special arts programming across the school. Charlie Masters, Upper School Performing Arts Chair and David Love, Upper School Visual Arts teacher, will talk specifically about the initiative's goals and background. Examples of student works and historical precedents will provide additional insight and context. Peter McVeigh 1760, Upper School History Teacher and CSO director, will close out the evening with examples of the good work being done by GA students and an overview of the challenges ahead.

A wine and cheese reception will follow the presentation along with a display of the students’ Art For Change pieces.

* "Art for Change" is a collaborative effort of a number of departments/organizations at GA, most notably the visual and performing arts departments and CSO. “Art for Change” (and the tangential "Music for Change") hopes to showcase the arts' ability to give voice and create positive change in the world. It hopes to complement CSO and build on Peter McVeigh and CSO's highly successful "Awareness Week". Events in "Art for Change” will include a wide array of experiences including art exhibits, guest lecturers to musical performances.
