Program Description

The Visual Art Department at Germantown Academy is committed to providing a comprehensive education in the arts within the context of a liberal arts education. Our foundation and advanced curriculum is a well-rounded and versatile approach to the study and application of art. It is designed to provide a creatively stimulating education in an open environment of studio classes. Experimentation and innovation, collaboration and social responsibility are themes built into the curriculum. While these courses extend excellent opportunities for the general study of art and life-long arts advocacy, they are also designed to cultivate serious talents in the visual arts. Many of our students have gone on to prominent careers in commercial, fine, and applied arts.

Second Grade Insect Pillows

After printing their insects on fabric, 2nd graders learned fabric techniques for how to make them into pillows. First, they traced their fabric onto a second piece of fabric, cut it out, and pinned their two pieces of fabric “right sides” together. Next, they used the sewing machine to sew around the edges, pulled their fabric “right side” out and stuffed their pillows. Their insect pillows are installed together outside the 2nd grade classrooms!  These students also began their next unit on painting by learning how to tint their blue sky color by adding white. They are learning the basic shapes of local trees and created a tree based on either a round/oval, cone, pyramid, funnel, or spreading shape. Next they will learn several painting and texture techniques to create their trees.
